Frequently asked questions
The active mobility aids are relatively new and make use of very modern technology, so there are often misunderstandings about them. In order to inform you as well as possible, we are happy to help you get rid of many of these misunderstandings. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
The products have a steering wheel that can be used to steer to the left or right in the usual way. Moving the rider's weight to the left/right does not affect the direction of travel. This is also recommended, as it provides lateral stability and makes it much easier to open a door, for example.
During use, the technique corrects the balance every mini-second and the vehicle will always be able to react faster than you move. When the vehicle is used correctly, you won't fall over. In practice, it is very easy to use and this thought will quickly disappear as soon as you gain some driving experience. It is important to take seriously that you are on the road with a vehicle, just like you would do with a mobility scooter or a car.
There is a parking position in which sturdy supports are placed on the ground so that the vehicle can be parked in a completely stable position. Depending on the brand, there are different possibilities, but a stable transfer is always possible. For example, by folding the armrests downwards, which makes it an aid to leaning on and facilitates access to the seat.
A good balance of the user is not important, because the technology continuously ensures the right balance. Also read the explanation under the first point above.
The vehicles are indeed powered by powerful electric motors, but you really have to do something yourself. That's the beauty and fun of it and that's why we call it a product for active mobility. While driving, you are active by moving your weight. You can compare it to an active sitting position, part of your torso muscles are used for this. Ergonomically this is very good for your body (even when you don't have all the functions anymore) and we would like to invite you to come and experience this (together with an occupational therapist).
They are used from young to (very) old, but it is fair to say that not everyone has sufficient physical or mental (cognitive) skills to be able to handle products for active mobility properly. This is mainly because it is active (not comparable to joystick control, for example) and because you need to be able to act with sufficient alertness.
It is not an electric wheelchair, it is not an active hand operated wheelchair, it is not a mobility scooter, it is a combination of everything. The products for active mobility do not fit in any of the existing boxes. It is a new category of vehicles that offers new possibilities. You have to experience it yourself to really understand it. Feel free to make an appointment for this.
Age does not play a significant role in active mobility products. It is much more important that you have the right attitude. There is a good chance that older drivers will feel young again when they are on the road with it!
Depending on the brand, annual maintenance is required. 2Kerr likes to keep you mobile. Learn more about this under the menu "service".
At the moment, the products for active mobility are not yet a standard range in the provision of aids by the municipalities. However, it is always possible to apply for a customised solution and/or a PGB fee, with which these products can be financed in whole or in part. 2Kerr has extensive experience with these procedures and is happy to advise you on the possibilities.
In contrast to a hand-operated wheelchair, where shoulder injuries often occur, there is no detrimental physical effect during prolonged use. You will experience positive effects because the fine motor skills are stimulated and because your whole upper body is more in motion. There are also known examples where less pain is experienced during use.
Due to the compact dimensions and the very small turning circle, the products are pre-eminently suitable for use outdoors.
