How it started

The first test drive and the big bump

I arranged a test drive with Gerhard—back then at Segway NL. One round was enough to be convinced. Maneuverable in tight spaces, stable outside, and a feeling that you are in control. The real challenge was in the reimbursement: the UWV did not recognize this product. With a lot of effort, substantiation, and perseverance, I managed to get a 100% reimbursement. That was crucial, because without the Genny, I would not have been able to continue working until the age of 67.

For twelve years, I rode my Genny Urban with complete satisfaction. The freedom is unparalleled. Suddenly, you are the one choosing routes, instead of the other way around. A quick stop at the construction site to sort something out, walking the dog in the park, or a stroll through the woods—all of it was possible. I could move at the pace of the day and with the people around me; not bypassing, but participating.
Recently, I started riding the Genny Zero— a worthy successor. What struck me first: improved handling, shorter stopping distance, and it's quieter. The lowering steering wheel with display clearly shows all functions and feels intuitive. And yes, aesthetics matter too: the Zero has the appearance of a sports car. You can tell by the reactions on the street. People say, “What a cool device you have!”, instead of “Wow, what do you have there?” That difference affects you—you are addressed based on your vehicle, not your limitation.

The Genny—first the Urban, now the Zero—has enriched my life with opportunities and ease. I determine my route, I choose my pace, and I can continue doing what energizes me. Whether it’s work, running errands, the dog, the woods, or spontaneously dropping by somewhere—I get there, and I participate.
