Meet Nico, one of our inspiring customers who loves to go out on his own!

We can now also take long walks and bike rides together, which we couldn't do before. What a freedom, really enjoying 😊 We just got back yesterday from a week and a half vacation in Domburg, also with the Hoss. We also had a weekend getaway in Noordwijk and went to a large Italian market. The Hoss can’t go through soft sand, but there are paved areas and mats on the beaches. In one photo, you can see a boardwalk leading to the restaurant on the beach, allowing me to go to the restaurant in the Hoss 'normally'!

My municipality, a small town where we just moved, was not aware of the existence of these balance wheelchairs and wanted to have a conversation about my situation, needs, and (im)possibilities. By the way, I didn’t know about balance wheelchairs until three years ago, but I happened to meet someone in a balance wheelchair at a market, and that’s how I got started.

In daily life, I don’t need a wheelchair much to be able to ‘survive’: I can still walk, climb stairs, and play table tennis without a wheelchair. But I can only walk short distances. So I can’t walk a longer distance and definitely can’t bike. With the Hoss, I can. By the way, the ‘biking’ is just riding with the Hoss, but in the fast mode (15 km per hour).

The Hoss offers me much more: I can go to the shopping center in our municipality without a car. On tiring days for work where I would need to walk a lot, I can use the Hoss instead of walking a lot. Even when I’m tired, I can still take our little dog out for a walk. The Hoss can handle forest paths, gravel, grass (as long as it’s not too high), hills, going up and down bridges, and small curbs (no higher than 8 cm). Luckily the municipality was positive after our conversation, and I could explain to them all the benefits of the Hoss compared to ‘regular’ wheelchairs. I received funding for part of the Hoss through a WMO-PGB budget, which is really great.

Life is more than just ‘surviving’: the quality of our life has really improved thanks to the Hoss!
