Gina on the Omeo balance wheelchair — “Finally going to the city, riding school, and friends by myself”

On June 15, 2019, I picked up my own blue Omeo. I was nervous and excited — and with good reason, as you steer the Omeo with your body (body-steering) or with the joystick. The first time moving with my body was thrilling and mind-blowing. I wanted to master this balance wheelchair. The speed of up to 20 km/h also suits me; I love that. The Omeo was a perfect match.

As a five-year-old girl, I started at the riding school in Boekend. It was good for me — also therapeutically — and I loved it. On the horse, I felt free and cleared my mind. What I was missing was the ability to go to the riding school by myself.
Thirteen years later, I can tell my parents: “Mom and Dad, I’m off.” Grocery shopping, visiting friends in the city, going to the riding school or school — I go. I am so thankful that I get to do this. Being wheelchair-bound is not always fun, but the Omeo has created opportunities for me that are invaluable. Life is and will remain a celebration — wheelchair or not. And I plan to keep enjoying!
