On vacation with a balance wheelchair: it’s possible!

Whether you're going by car or booking a flight. With a balance wheelchair, you can set off without worries. Goal: participate immediately on site - from the promenade to the supermarket - without hassle along the way.

Taking it in the car

By folding/removing the steering wheel, backrest, and footrest, a balance wheelchair fits in many cars. Loading and unloading is easiest with (foldable) ramp plates. In balance mode, you can control the wheelchair into the car — without sitting on it.

Tip: If you’re renting a car at your destination, bring tie-down straps/belts to secure the wheelchair tightly.

Flying with a balance wheelchair

Airlines are strict with lithium-ion batteries. A standard Segway wheelchair is usually not allowed; however, as a wheelchair, there are options. Report your wheelchair in advance, provide specifications for the battery/weight, and plan extra time for check-in and oversized baggage. Traveling is easiest with a flight case or Cargo Box: the chair rides in it, stays upright, and is protected from sliding or being laid down.

Smart solution: flight case / Cargo Box
After less pleasant experiences with handling, customer Sven found peace in a Flight Case: bags and ramp plates in it, exchange at the counter, bags on the conveyor, and the balance wheelchair safely in the box. Result: less chance of damage, more control over the process. Want to fly? Contact 2KERR for rental options for the Cargo Box/Flight Case and practical guidance.

At the airport:
- Allow extra time: be there early, 3 hours is often too tight.
- Bring a backup: a foldable balance wheelchair can be handy during long layovers or as a temporary replacement in case of damage.
- Label and document: put your name/phone on the chair and keep specs (battery/weight) both digitally and printed.

Our tips - short, practical, and tested

Preparation

  • Notify your airline or travel agent in advance about your balance wheelchair.
  • Call the airline in good time: ask about requirements and forms for transporting it as a wheelchair.
  • Check your (travel) insurance: inform them that you are traveling with a balance wheelchair and note emergency numbers.
  • Consider a Flight case / Cargo Box for extra protection during the flight.
  • Want to compare or test first? Then plan a test ride!

At your destination

  • Charging: check the voltage system (110/220V) in advance and bring a suitable adapter.
  • Tires: due to air pressure differences, tires may be softer; a simple 12V compressor is ideal to pump them back up.
  • Parking and securing: the ground is not always flat. Bring a small wooden board to place under the rear leg — this way, your wheelchair or flight case stands flat and stable.
  • Rental car tip: ask for a minivan (e.g., Dodge Caravan or 9-seater). The Flight Case plus separate balance wheelchair fits easily in there. Handy for luggage, ramp plates, and tie-down straps.
